DESCRIPTION:Learn how to do your best waste management… at home!Ever find yourself staring at your household waste\, wondering if you can or can’t recycle something\, which items belong in each bin and how you can reduce the waste you generate at home? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis February\, the popular University of Toronto Trash Team’s Home Waste Audit returns and invites you to challenge yourself to reduce your waste as you increase your waste literacy! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBy taking part in the Home Waste Audit\, you will learn more about plastic pollution and its impacts\, the available waste streams in your municipality\, and challenge yourself to decrease your waste generation at home. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow it works: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Home Waste Audit takes place over two weeks from Sunday\, February 8 until Saturday\, February 21\, 2026. Each week you will record what items you dispose of in your garbage and recycling bins.\n\n\n\nYou will be invited to two webinars\, taking place before and after completing your Home Waste Audit.\n\n\n\nWe will also share two short online surveys\, one before and the other during your Home Waste Audit.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWebinars: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWebinar 1 – Introduction to the Home Waste Audit: Tuesday\, February 3 at 7 pm EST.The first webinar takes place the week before starting your Home Waste Audit to provide a background on plastic pollution\, the importance of reducing and correctly sorting your household waste\, and instructions for how to take par \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWebinar 2 – Results from the Home Waste Audit: Tuesday\, March 10 at 7 pm EST.The second webinar takes place a few weeks after you complete your Home Waste Audit to share the final results\, learn about everyone’s collective experience and to put this into broader context. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n***Registering for a ticket will automatically register you for both webinars.*** \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOnce registered\, please check your Eventbrite emails for complete instructions and resources.

SUMMARY:Microplastic Blitz: A Community Science Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday May 9\, join our Plastic Pellet Blitz to become a microplastic scientist for the day and learn standard protocols to monitor and clean up tiny plastics. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe University of Toronto (U of T) Trash Team in celebrating the Provincial Day of Action on Litter\, with a Microplastic Blitz! This community science cleanup provides an opportunity to become a microplastic scientist for a day as you dig for tiny plastics in the sand. Participants will work in small teams and learn standard protocols to monitor and clean up various microplastics. You can expect to find a mix of pre-production plastic pellets\, fragments\, foam pieces and films\, which the U of T Trash Team also find in trash traps they monitor along Toronto’s waterfront. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Details: \n\n\n\n\nDate: Saturday\, May 9\, 2026\n\n\n\nTime: Please arrive by 9:45 am to check in! We will begin promptly at 10 am and conclude at 12:30 pm\n\n\n\nWhere: Sir Casimir Gzowski Park Beach (2001 Lake Shore Blvd W) under the picnic shelter near Al Pa Cones (view map)\n\n\n\nWhat to bring: All supplies will be provided. Please dress for the weather. Pizza and light refreshments will be provided. Bottle-filling stations are available at the park\, so remember to bring your reusable water bottle\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCancellation Policy: The event will run rain or shine but will be cancelled if there is a greater than 70% chance of thunderstorms or other hazardous weather. If there is a cancellation\, registered participants will be emailed by 8:00 am on the morning of the event. Remember to dress appropriately! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event contributes to the Toronto Inner Harbour Floatables Strategy\, a collaborative strategy to reduce plastic pollution and other floating litter in the harbour.
