SUMMARY:Plastic Pellet Blitz: A Community Science Event
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday May 10\, join our Plastic Pellet Blitz to become a community scientist and learn standard protocols to monitor and cleanup plastic pellets. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin the University of Toronto (U of T) Trash Team in celebrating the Provincial Day of Action on Litter\, with our plastic pellet blitz! This community science cleanup focuses on a less familiar source of microplastic pollution known as pre-production plastic pellets (or nurdles)! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlastic pellets are used to make new plastic products\, however due to their small size can easily become plastic pollution. In fact\, every year\, the U of T Trash Team finds plastic pellets in trash capture devices deployed along Toronto’s Waterfront. During this event\, participants will work in small teams and learn standard protocols to monitor and cleanup plastic pellets. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event supports Operation Sweep the Creek\, a U of T Trash Team Pollution Prevention Project that addresses plastic pellet pollution at the source. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent details \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat to bring: All supplies will be provided\, please dress for the weather. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided. Bottle-filling stations are available at the park\, so remember to bring your reusable water bottle. Washroom facilities are available at the park. \n\n\n\nDate: Saturday\, May 10th\, 2025 \n\n\n\nTime: Please arrive by 9:45 am to check in! We will begin promptly at 10 am and conclude at 12:30 pm. \n\n\n\nWhere: Sir Casimir Gzowski Park Beach (2001 Lake Shore Blvd W) under the picnic shelter near Al Pa Cones (view map)

SUMMARY:Life of a Pellet: Plastic Pollution Short Film & Mixer
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the premiere of Life of a Pellet\, a stop motion short film exploring pre-production plastic pellet pollution. Made entirely of plastic trash and real plastic pellets\, Life of a Pellet tells the tale of Peter the Pellet who is excited to become a useful plastic item in the world but gets lost outside a production factory. Peter is washed into a storm drain\, floats down the Humber River and ends up in Lake Ontario. \n\n\n\nLearn from community leaders and speakers as they share more about local research and provide a behind-the-scenes look at the process of creating stop-motion animation for the film. \n\n\n\nLife of a Pellet was conceptualized by Zoë Ungku Fa’iz. Building upon her own research on microplastics in landfill leachate\, she was inspired to extend the lives of a portion of the millions of the pre-production plastic pellets that were lost to the environment and collected from “Operation Sweep the Creek 3.0”’s project.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe film is supported by Ocean Wise’s Eco-Action Accelerator Grant. Pellets were sourced from U of T Trash Team’s Operation Sweep the Creek 3.0 pollution prevention project. Storyboard and story development by Dani Doodles. Animation by Stop Motion Department.

SUMMARY:Pollution Prevention Project Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:This webinar series highlights a selection of our Pollution Prevention Projects – aimed at tackling plastic pollution in the environment\, one source at a time! Our Pollution Prevention Projects focus on sources of plastic pollution\, informed by the types of plastic we cleanup as part of our Fighting Floatables initiative – aimed at reducing and monitoring plastic pollution and other floating litter. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThroughout this series\, you will learn more about our recent findings on four different sources of plastic pollution: single-use foodware\, pre-production plastic pellets\, plastic wet wipes\, and insulation foam from construction. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEach webinar will showcase how we use science to inform solutions and share our data-driven pilots to measure their effectiveness. This includes an introduction to the issue and our research\, a look at results to date\, and panel discussion of opportunities for solutions with diverse stakeholders. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThurs Oct 3 (noon – 1 pm): Single-Use Foodware\n\n\n\nTues Oct 29 (2 pm – 3 pm): Pre-Production Plastic Pellets\n\n\n\nThurs Nov 14 (noon – 1 pm): Wet Wipes\n\n\n\nTues Dec 3 (noon – 1 pm): Construction Foam

SUMMARY:Plastic Pellet Blitz: A Community Science Event
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday August 17\, join our Plastic Pellet Blitz to become a community scientist and learn standard protocols to monitor and cleanup plastic pellets. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin our first-ever Plastic Pellet Blitz\, a cleanup focused on a less familiar source of microplastic pollution called pre-production plastic pellets! Plastic pellets are the building blocks used to make everyday plastic products\, and\, unfortunately\, their small size makes it so they can easily become pollution. In fact\, every year\, we finds plastic pellets in trash capture devices deployed along Toronto’s Waterfront. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event supports Operation Sweep the Creek\, a U of T Trash Team Pollution Prevention Project that addresses plastic pellet pollution at the source. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent details: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate: Saturday\, August 17th\, 2024\n\n\n\nTime: Please arrive by 9:45 am to check in! We will begin promptly at 10 am and conclude at noon. \n\n\n\nWhere: Sir Casimir Gzowski Park Beach (2001 Lake Shore Blvd W) under the picnic shelter near Al Pa Cones (view map)\n\n\n\nWhat to bring: All supplies will be provided\, please dress for the weather. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided. Bottle-filling stations are available at the park\, so remember to bring your reusable water bottle. Washroom facilities are available at the park.

SUMMARY:Unwoven Strands: A Visual Study of Microfibers
DESCRIPTION:.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEmily Chudnovsky\, detail of the felting process for “Unwoven Strands A Visual Study of Microfibers\,” 2023. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHart House’s Talking Walls provides a venue for our artist-in-residence Emily Chudnovsky’s newest series of artworks; Felt One\, Felt Two\, and Felt Three\, made using sheep’s wool\, invasive grapevines\, and microfibers. Microfibers are tiny strands of microplastic that often end up in waterways.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInspired by our pollution prevention project\, Divert and Capture\, this exhibition draws a connection between invasive species and plastic pollution – a synthetic invasive ‘species’ in our environment. The Felt Pieces also explore some of the possibilities that the small but pervasive material might hold. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUnwoven Strands is on display March 8 – 29. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExhibition Details\n\n\n\nOpening Reception (March 8)\n\n\n\nWorkshop (March 28)
