SUMMARY:Science Rendezvous
DESCRIPTION:Plastic In My Watershed! \n\n\n\nParticipants will learn about plastic pollution in our watersheds and how our organization uses a solutions-based approach to research plastic pollution. \n\n\n\nIn the first activity\, participants will learn what a watershed is then explore the different sources and fate of plastics in our watershed using an interactive tabletop watershed model. In our second activity\, participants will learn how different plastics move and travel in a watershed and eventually reach the ocean by playing a game float\, sink or suspend. For this game\, different objects are placed in water to observe how they act. We will also have an outreach microscope on-hand to observe microplastic samples and demonstrate how scientists sample and characterize them in the lab. All activities will culminate in discussions about potential solutions to plastic pollution.

SUMMARY:International Trash Trap Network Workshop: Asia Pacific
DESCRIPTION:Globally\, the contamination of plastic waste in freshwater and marine ecosystems is increasing. We estimate that roughly 30 million tonnes of plastic waste entered aquatic ecosystems in 2020. If we continue business as usual\, this number may increase as much as three-fold by 2030. There is no time to waste\, and we all must do our part. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe aim of the International Trash Trap Network is to exponentially increase annual cleanup efforts by inspiring groups around the world to trap trash in their local environments\, and to link these efforts to quantify our collective impact as part of the International Coastal Cleanup. Trash Traps are technologies and devices that help capture anthropogenic debris from aquatic ecosystems\, while collecting data to quantitatively measure our impact. Within this workshop we aim to build local capacity within the Asia Pacific region for trapping trash as part of the solution to the global issue of plastic pollution. We would like to inspire others to trap trash on their waterfronts and to quantify this impact collectively. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate and Time:\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop will take place on March 16th 2023 from 9am – 2pm GMT+10.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop objectives:\n\n\n\n\nTo share the value of trash trapping devices and their role in fighting plastic pollution (i.e.\, plastic pollution prevention and cleanup\, measured impact\, community outreach).\n\n\n\nTo motivate collaboration among stakeholders (e.g.\, marinas and NGOs\, or port authorities and Universities) to create their own trash trapping projects.\n\n\n\nTo share lessons learned from existing projects to help ensure new collaborations are built upon a successful framework.\n\n\n\nTo build a network of teams working independently toward a common goal with a shared database where both our independent and collaborative impact can be measured and communicated through the International Coastal Cleanup.

SUMMARY:Sea(Bin) Dive!
DESCRIPTION:Join PortsToronto and the U of T Trash Team for a free (Sea)Bin Dive at Marina Quay West! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSince 2019\, the Toronto Harbour has been home to trash trapping devices called Seabins that work to divert tens of thousands of pieces of small plastic from Lake Ontario each year. These floating waste bins act like a vaccum\, scooping up floating debris as small as a grain of rice. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis year\, the Trash Trapping Program is seeing its biggest year yet – with 12 Seabins deployed throughout the Toronto Harbour\, including six right here on the Toronto Waterfront – and we want to celebrate with you! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet hands-on with University of Toronto Trash Team researchers and learn how to characterize micro and macro plastics collected by the Trash Trapping Program’s Seabins on the Toronto Waterfront. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do we get collected plastics/debris out of the Seabins? See a demonstration of the U of T Trash Team’s unique extraction technique and get up close and personal with the Seabins!Get hands on and contribute to important plastic pollution research! Characterize macroplastics within bin materials and record results in a data sheet.Learn about microplastics! Did you know that vegetation acts as a magnet for tiny microplastics? Learn more where microplastics come from\, how we can remove them from the water and what we can do to prevent them from getting there in the first place.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe (Sea)Bin Dive is free\, but space is limited. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTrash Trapping Program \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe PortsToronto Trash Trapping Program employs trash trapping technology and solutions-based research to tackle plastic pollution and protect Toronto’s waters for future generations. It is led by PortsToronto and the U of T Trash Team\, in partnership with the Waterfront Business Improvement Area (WBIA) and the City of Toronto BIA Office Innovation Grant\, Nieuport Aviation\, the Toronto Zoo\, Harbourfront Centre and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA). It is part of the Toronto Inner Harbour Floatables Strategy\, a partnership led by TRCA\, and of the International Trash Trapping Network\, an initiative led by the U of T Trash Team and Ocean Conservancy\, and has influenced the launch of similar trash trapping and data collection programs throughout the Great Lakes and beyond. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nQuestions? SUMMARY:Lake Ontario Evening - How Circulation Patterns Affect Water Quality Along the Toronto Waterfront
DESCRIPTION:Reduced water quality has the potential to impact our use and enjoyment of the Toronto and Region waterfront. Although we have made great progress addressing issues such as floatable trash\, beach closures\, and increased growth of potentially harmful algae\, these continue to be a cause for concern. \n\n\n\nKnowing how water circulates can help address these concerns by predicting areas of reduced water quality and focusing on remediation efforts. \n\n\n\nThis Lake Ontario Evening will showcase some of the amazing work being done to better understand water circulation patterns and address water quality issues within Canada’s largest urban centre.
