SUMMARY:Science Literacy Week: Ecofriendly Swaps for Plastic
DESCRIPTION:Join Samantha Santoro this Science Literacy Week to learn more about single-use plastic and its impact on our watersheds\, how to reduce your own plastic usage in your day-to-daye routines with some ecofriendly swaps\, and more about the University of Toronto Trash Team. \n\n\n\nSamantha is a graduate and former research student from the University of Toronto where she studied microplastic pollution in the Rochman Lab\, and she is currently working as a Research Associate. You can most often find Samantha walking her dog Wally\, reading\, or volunteering at litter cleanups with the University of Toronto Trash Team.

SUMMARY:Urban Litter Challenge (Socially Distanced Edition)
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the International Coastal Cleanup with the U of T Trash Team by joining one of our community cleanups. Hosted in neighbourhoods in and around the Toronto area\, we’ll prevent litter in our watershed from entering Lake Ontario and its connected tributaries! Volunteers will collect data on type and amount of litter collected\, which contributes to both the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup and International Coastal Cleanup. \n\n\n\nSelect one of our cleanup locations to register (capacity is limited to help maintain social distancing): \n\n\n\nRennie Park (Ward 4)Sunnyside Beach (Ward 4)Trinity Bellwoods (Ward 10)Coronation Park (Ward 10)Toronto Music Gardens (Ward 10) **Date Change to Saturday Sept 18**Ward’s Island Beach (Ward 10)Cedarvale Ravine Park (Ward 12)Riverdale Park East (Ward 14)Ashbridges Bay Park East (Ward 19)Maple Lions Park (Vaughan)\n\n\n\nDon’t see a cleanup near you to join? SUMMARY:Plastic Pollution\, Toxicity\, and Policy Change
DESCRIPTION:A public dialogue between activists\, scholars\, scientists\, and policy experts tackling the issues at the forefront of plastics pollution policy. The panel will focus on activating resistance to mechanisms of petro-chemical pollution affecting human health and ecosystems. The known and unknown effects of plastic as a matrix for chemical accumulation\, the dangers of its circulation in waterways\, and the uneven distribution of its impact on communities are among the primary concerns of the movement that calls for “turning off the tap” and regulating the plastics industry and future development. \n\n\n\nWith Vanessa Gray\, Mark Fisher\, Michelle Murphy\, Chelsea Rochman\, moderated by Heather Davis \n\n\n\nThis event is held in conjunction with the exhibition Plastic Heart: Surface All the Way Through on view at the Art Museum at the University of Toronto from September 8 through November 20\, 2021.

SUMMARY:Tagging Trash in Lake Ontario
DESCRIPTION:Have you seen the special orange water bottles floating around the Toronto Harbour? The University of Toronto Trash Team is studying GPS-tracked water bottles into the harbour to uncover where trash ends up along our waterfront and lake. This helps to find better solutions to our litter problem. \n\n\n\nLearn about our Fighting Floatables initiative that examines the sources and fate of litter accumulation along the waterfront\, how litter moves along the waterfront and in the harbour\, and how these questions will help us inform policies aimed at providing solutions upstream and downstream. \n\n\n\nPresented by Cassandra Sherlock\, the Community Outreach and Research Specialist from U of T Trash Team and previously a research assistant in microplastic research at Chelsea Rochman’s lab.
