Microplastic Blitz

This community science event focuses on tiny plastics often “hidden” along the shorelines of Lake Ontario – until you stop and take a closer look.

The Microplastic Blitz provides an opportunity to become a microplastic scientist for a day as you dig for tiny plastics in the sand. Participants typically find a mix of pre-production plastic pellets, fragments, foam pieces and films. Since 2024, participants have collected 11,215 microplastics from the beach.

  • How it works: Participants work in small teams and learn protocols to monitor and clean up microplastics within a small section of the beach.
  • How to join: Visit our events calendar in late March for registration details.
