Prior to placing a trash capture device in a body of water, we recommend you survey your watershed. This involves investigating where and how trash accumulates within a waterbody and how patterns change across seasons and weather patterns. In order to do this, we’ve developed the Visual Audit. This can help you determine the best locations for technological solutions like trash capture devices. It can also help inform the type of trash capture device best suited for your area.
How to conduct a Visual Audit: Simply record the floating litter at different locations along your waterbody. During the summer of 2020 we quantified and characterized the floating litter accumulating in and around docks and slips, from Bathurst Quay to Sugar Beach in the Toronto Harbour.

This data is being used to help collaborating stakeholders select the best areas to place trash capture devices.
